Many people rarely look at their mattresses and cover them with sheets. However, when you have an accident, you may find that your queen or king size mattress has a stain on it. Today we are going to talk about the various types of stains you might have, as well as the products you can use and cleaning methods.

That way, you can restore your mattress and use it longer. Of course, there may come a time where you require a new mattress, especially if the staining is severe.

Type of Stains You Could Have on Your Mattress

There are a variety of stains that you could get on your mattress. These can include:

  • Urine or Sweat
  • Blood
  • Odors
  • Vomit
  • Gum or Oil
  • Deodorant Stains
  • Sugary Foods and Beverages
  • Dark-colored Beverages
  • Ink

Best Mattress Stain Removers

The stain remover you need is based on the type of stain you have. Homemade stain removers often work the best, whether you’ve got a soft mattress, mid-firm, or a firm one. The kind of mattress you have can also play a part. Innerspring mattresses are the most popular, but there are premium mattresses, as well. These can include memory foam, latex, and many others.

In most cases, the best stain remover for your mattress is going to be a homemade product or hydrogen peroxide. You can easily create a mixture with various household items so that you can save money and clean your mattress thoroughly.

Options can include white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, dishwashing soap, baking soda, essential oils (for scent), and regular laundry detergent. Salt, cornstarch, lemon juice, and ammonia may also be used.

How to Clean Your Mattress?

To clean your mattress, you need to determine the stain you have and get your tools together. For bad smells, you can use a little essential oil and baking soda. Let all of that sit on the mattress and then vacuum it all up.

Sweat stains usually look like yellow stains and can be in the form of your body. It’s possible to remove it with hydrogen peroxide, dishwashing soap, and baking soda. You need eight ounces of the hydrogen peroxide with a drop of your soap and about three tablespoons of the baking soda. Add these to a spray bottle and shake it to mix it up. Then, spray it directly onto the stains and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Blot the stain away with absorbent pads and then let the mattress air dry.

When you aren’t feeling well and can’t make it to the bathroom or the bucket, vomit stains are likely to be found on the mattress.

To clean, you must first remove the solid bits. Then, you can take off the sheets and blankets and wash those separately. Soak up any liquid with a dry cloth and absorb as much of it as you can. However, don’t rub on the stain.

Add some hydrogen peroxide – enough to moisten the stain without soaking it. Let it sit there for five minutes and blot it away with a towel. Now, pour some baking soda on the mess and leave it that way for the night. Vacuum everything clean in the morning.

How to Get Pee Stains out of a Mattress

Whether it’s yours, your child’s, or a pet, urine leaves a deep yellow stain. When it comes to removing it, much effort is involved, but that’s because you also have to get rid of the smell.

If the stains are old, you may find that the mattress is completely damaged. However, you may still be able to remove dried urine with vinegar and baking soda.

Start with equal parts of vinegar and water and mix it up in a spray bottle. Spray it onto the stain and blot dry. Sprinkle some baking soda over it to help with the smell. Let it sit overnight and vacuum everything up the next day.

When you’re starting with a fresh urine stain, the process of cleaning it is much easier.

Use paper towels or a cloth to pick up as much of the urine on the mattress as possible. Mix up three tablespoons of the baking soda with about eight ounces of the hydrogen peroxide. Spray it on the stain and let it dry. Apply a bit more baking soda to the stain and let it sit overnight. Vacuum the mattress to clean it.

White vinegar can also be used here. Use one part of the white vinegar with two parts of slightly warm water. Spray this mixture onto the stain and blot it dry. Let the mattress dry thoroughly and then use a damp cloth to remove the residual solution.

For pet urine stains, you need an enzyme-based cleaner. Vinegar with baking soda could work, as vinegar contains enzymes.

How to Remove Blood stains from a Mattress?

The most challenging of stains to remove is blood. It’s even harder to eradicate if it’s old and dry. Therefore, if you do get blood on the mattress, you want to start working immediately.

If the stain is old, be prepared to repeat the cleaning process multiple times before seeing results. Even afterward, there’s no guarantee that it can be removed. When that happens, you may be better off buying a new mattress.

Start with hydrogen peroxide, as it is a bleaching agent. Be careful and consider wearing gloves while working.

Mix two ounces of the hydrogen peroxide with four ounces of cornstarch and a tablespoon of salt. Form a paste and apply it directly onto the stain. The stain should start foaming, so be ready with a cloth to blot quickly

Apply more of the paste (you may need to mix more together if it is a large stain or very stubborn). Let this dry on the mattress and then remove it by scraping it up. Now, you can vacuum up the bits and check your work.

If your bloodstain is fresh, you can use either baking soda or salt/water to clean it. You need about 10 ounces of cold water with two teaspoons of salt. Add these to your spray bottle and spray it over the stain, blotting it away. All of the extra moisture is removed, and you continue the process until the blood is gone. Try absorbent pads to pull up the moisture from the spray to help it dry faster.

Those who prefer baking soda should mix about four ounces of the powder with 20 ounces of very cold water. Add the solution to the stain and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Take the damp cloth and blot until all of the stain is gone. Then, take a dry towel and blot to remove extra moisture so that the mattress air dries.

Bottom Line

Regardless of the stain you have on your mattress, the one goal is to clean it and eradicate it. Often, homeowners wait a bit too long, which gives them more work to do. It’s always best to tackle a stain as soon as it happens.

With so many different stain types out there, it can be tough to know how to clean them. Luckily, you can purchase an all-purpose mattress stain remover or make one using household items. Often, it’s best to use things around the house because there are no chemicals, and you get the same results. However, the choice is ultimately yours.
