Casper has three mattress options in varying heights and price points while Tuft & Needle has two separate lines of mattresses which concentrate on eco-friendliness and comfort. Here’s more on how the two brands compare.

Who Is It For?

Casper mattresses span three separate lines, and all are of mid- to lower-range firmness. The three mattress varieties offer a range of heights, features, and pricing. Our team appreciated that there’s an affordable option for every price range, but enhanced features if you decide to splurge.

Similarly, Tuft & Needle also offers separate mattress lines; they have their basic mattress plus a newer Mint line. Our team feels that Tuft & Needle mattresses are a great eco-conscious choice both for customers who desire comfort and those who have allergies or environmental concerns.

They range in height from a cushy 11.5 inches (the Wave) to a comfortable 10 inches (the Casper) to an affordable 8.5 inches (the Casper Essential).Tuft & Needle’s two lines, the T&N and Mint, use similar construction methods, but the more luxurious Mint has additional cooling features and extra support.

Construction of the Mattresses

Casper’s mattresses are all memory-foam only and start with a top foam layer which mimics springs without the painful pressure points. All three use hybrid foam construction with open-cell foam for cooler sleeping.

The Essential mattress has three layers of foam, the Casper has four layers, and the Wave has five layers, one of which is a hypersensitive top layer. Our top pick for back pain sufferers is the Wave, thanks to its cushy feel and ergonomic support, but for many sleepers, the other two models will offer plenty of comfort, too.

With Tuft & Needle, both mattresses start with two layers of memory foam that reacts to pressure, cradling your body the more pressure you apply. Both mattress lines are UL GREENGUARD Gold Certified, a guarantee that impressed our team due to its goal of reducing pollutants both in the environment and in our bedrooms!

The Mint mattress offers perks like graphite for heat dispersion, two more inches in height with a third foam layer, edge support to reduce sagging and lumps, and cooling gel beads for extra heat reduction.

Trial Period and Guarantee

Both Casper and Tuft & Needle offer 100-night sleep trials. With Casper, you can return the mattress for free if you decide you don’t want it. Their hassle-free return policy also applies to any bedding, pillows, or other products that you picked with your mattress order. We liked this feature because it means you can try every item and accessory risk-free.

If you keep your Casper mattress, a 10-year warranty applies to the foam, meaning they guarantee the mattress won’t sag or they’ll replace it.

Tuft & Needle’s 100-night sleep trial functions similarly: both companies remove the mattresses and donate them to charity whenever possible. Tuft & Needle also covers its beds with a 10-year warranty, which includes replacement for any material defects.

Firmness Level

All three of Casper’s mattresses offer low-level firmness with cushy sleep surfaces. And while you can expect the thicker Wave model to feel plushier than the other two types, our team feels like all three are relatively soft, especially in comparison with Tuft & Needle’s mattresses. Still, the Wave is a more ergonomic model, so don’t let its plush and height fool you: there’s sufficient support despite the soft appearance.

The basic T&N model is medium-firm and quite supportive. The Mint mattress is plusher on the surface, but still offers the medium-firm support we like to see. Also, the Mint also has edge support, which will keep your mattress’ shape better and prevent sagging around the perimeter.

Comfort

The two primary measures of comfort with the Casper and Tuft & Needle mattresses are those of support and temperature regulation. Both of Casper’s memory foam mattresses help redistribute your body weight, allowing the surface to mold comfortably to your body. Plus, the open-cell foam helps keep you cooler than solid foam would.

With Tuft & Needle, pressure-relieving foam helps keep you supported. But with the Mint, those who sleep hot will feel significantly cooler thanks to the gel beads, graphite, and fast-wicking charcoal cover. Our team likes Tuft & Needle’s Mint for its cooling features, as it’s a great relief for those of us who tend to sleep warm and can’t get comfortable as a result.

Smell Effect

Although there’s no off-gassing present with Casper’s mattresses, the company does acknowledge that their water-based adhesive has a bit of an odor. Like most other vacuum-sealed beds, these mattresses may benefit from a bit of airing out within the first day or so of unboxing.

Tuft & Needle, on the other hand, calls their mattresses’ odor a “new bed smell.” The fact that all the components are certified non-toxic with as few inorganic ingredients as possible reassures our team that any odor is harmless.

Tuft & Needle Mattress

  • Great for allergies
  • Cooling features
  • Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is optimal with both the Casper and Tuft & Needle lines thanks to their purely memory foam construction. Unlike traditional and hybrid mattresses, which use inner springs in addition to foam components, these beds are far from bouncy. The plush surfaces feel comfortable, but they also reduce impact, so you’re not jostled in the middle of the night (or early in the morning) as your bedmate moves about.

    The Ordering Process

To order a Casper mattress, you’ll visit their website, click the type of mattress you want, select a size, and add the item to your online cart. You can also purchase bedding and pillows, which will be delivered to your door as well. Then, you’ll check out with free shipping.

To order a Tuft & Needle mattress, you can either order directly from the company via their website or choose to shop on Amazon.com. Purchases through Amazon guarantee a 100-night sleep trial for customers in the US. However, customers in Canada will only have a 30-night sleep trial guaranteed via Amazon. Shipping and returns are free with Tuft & Needle as well.

    Delivery and Packaging

Casper mattresses ship directly to your door, but if you also ordered accessories, the packages may arrive separately due to production scheduling. You can also opt for the White Glove delivery program in many locations, where a team will set up your mattress and remove the old one. If you choose the DIY setup route, note that the mattresses come in boxes with wheels for easy maneuvering.

Tuft & Needle deliveries arrive at your door within three to ten business days of placing the order. Boxes measure 19 by 19 by 44 inches and are simple to open and unpack. Just remove the cardboard and plastic wrap, then wait for the bed to expand.

    So what’s the verdict?

Deciding on which mattress to buy is never easy. After all, it’s a choice that will impact you every night, for hours at a time!  Good sleep is essential to healthy living, and we don’t take the mattress purchase decision lightly. That’s why our team has compared Casper and Tuft & Needle brands to help you make the optimal mattress decision.

Casper offers a line of three mattresses, from the basic Essential to the Wave model, which boasts more advanced support. All Casper mattresses are constructed of memory foam only and have various thickness levels, yet all fall under the low to mid-firmness levels. Tuft & Needle has two mattress lines, also constructed from memory foam, in the mid-firm to firm support range. That means between Casper and Tuft & Needle, you’ve really got all the firmness levels covered.

Tuft’s basic mattress is comparable to the Casper Essential, white Tuft’s new Mint mattress is a more advanced model, with lots of bells and whistles! We love the cooling features and extra support. Tuft & Needle has a definite focus on eco-friendliness, which is great for people who are environmentally conscious or suffer from allergies.

In terms of cost, you’re also comparing apples and apples. Casper’s mid and high-end range mattresses are similar in price to Tuft & Needle’s two lines. Casper’s Essential basic mattress is a true budget option, affordable for students, or those just starting on their first mattress purchase. All in all, between these two brands, you’ve definitely got a spread of choices to cover every type of sleeper and budget.
